This help manual is intended to help people setup and configure an Internet Dialup Connection in Windows98/95. The following subjects are covered: ü Where to change the number you are dialing to ü Where to change your modem (if you have more than one) ü Where to change the maximum speed of your connection ü Where to change the volume of your modem speaker To make a new Dial-up connection. 1.From your Desktop, double click the "My Computer" icon. 2.Double click the "Dial-up Networking" icon. 3.Double click "Make New Connection" icon. 4.Type in the name you would like to call this Dialup Connection. 4.aTo change your modem click on the pull down menu arrow and select the modem you wish to use/configure. 5.To configure your modem, click on Configure. If your modem is already configured, ignore this part and click next instead. 6.Configuring your modem. This is what it should look like. (You will most probably have a different modem than to what is in the picture so don't worry) 6.a.1 The COM port should not be changed unless you know what you are doing. If you are unsure, rather leave it. 6.a.2 If you want to turn off the sounds made by your modem when it is dialing up, put the marker to the far left under the "Speaker volume" 6.a.3 The maximum speed of your connection is next. 57600 is the standard setting. If you are having connection problems try setting it to 38400. 6.a.4 Leave the "Only connect at this speed" box unchecked, if it is checked, uncheck it, as this can cause a number of problems later. 6.b Click on the "Connection" tab on the top.
6.b.1 Uncheck the box "Wait for Dial Tone before dialing" This can stop you from dialing out if it is checked. 6.b.2 The "Cancel the call if not connected within **" box is used for timing. I recommend that you leave it as is. 6.b.3 Uncheck the "Disconnect a call if idle" box if it is checked.
6.c Click OK and then next. 7.This screen is used to put in the number your modem will be dialing out too. So type in the number your ISP gave you. 8.Click next, then click finish. 9.To edit an existing dialup, which you will need to do if you have just made a new dialup connection, follow these steps. 9.a From your Desktop double click the "My Computer" icon. 9.b Double click the "Dial-up Networking" icon. 9.c Right click your mouse button on the dialup connection you have made i.e."Netralink Dialup" 9.d Click on "Properties" 10.From this screen you can configure your modem again, change the number your modem dials out too, and other misc. options. Note: If you are sitting behind a switchboard of some sort, then you will want to put in the number to dial out, followed by a comma, and THEN the number your modem dials out to. For example: 11.Click on the "Server Types" tab next. 12.The only two things that should be checked are "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP". Uncheck everything else. 13.Click OK Note: If you want to put the "Netralink Dialup" on your desktop as a shortcut, right click on it and click "Create Shortcut", it will then tell you that you cannot create one there, would you like to create one on the desktop instead, click OK and it will now appear on your desktop as a shortcut.(You cannot edit the dialup properties from the shortcut however) Now you are finished setting up and configuring everything. Time to connect to the Internet. Double click the "Netralink Dialup" icon and type in your username and password and click connect. |
